Driving Practical Test

Steve Pearce Driving School of Shrewsbury will provide you with valuable guidance and practical experience to help you to pass your practical driving test with flying colours.

The Practical Driving Test is carried out by a Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency examiner; it will take between 38 to 45 minutes of driving and manoeuvres. The examiner will start by a simple eye test where you are asked to read a number plate from a distance of approximately 20 meters.

You will then asked 2 questions under the Mechanical Awareness ('Show me, tell me' questions: car driving test)  - Steve Pearce School of Motoring will of course provide you with guidance - PRACTICE HERE

The examiner will want to see that you are confident and can drive in a competent and safe manner. You will need to show that you can perceive the situations as they arise and respond with sound judgement.

Around half of the driving test will require you to drive independently and under turn-by-turn directions of the driving examiner. The independent driving section which lasts around 20 minutes will also require you to follow directions from a sat nav. The sat nav, a TomTom Start 52, will be provided and set-up by the examiner, regardless if your car has one already fitted.

You can ask the examiner for confirmation of where you are going if you are not sure, it wont matter if you go the wrong way unless you make a fault whilst doing it.

One in five driving tests wont use a sat nav, you will need to follow traffic signs instead.

In the changes made to driving tests in England and Wales in 2017 you will no longer be required to "reverse around a corner" and "turn-in-the-road" manoeuvres will no longer be tested, however these manoeuvres will still form part of your driving lessons with Steve Pearce Driving School.

In your practical test you will be asked to do one of three possible reversing manoeuvres

  • parallel park at the side of the road
  • park in a bay - either driving in and reversing out, or reversing in and driving out (the examiner will tell you which you have to do)
  • pull up on the right-hand side of the road, reverse for 2 car lengths and rejoin the traffic

You will also be asked to answer two vehicle safety questions while driving on your driving test, these are known as the ‘show me, tell me’ questions.

You’ll be asked the:

  • ‘tell me’ question (where you explain how you’d carry out a safety task) at the start of your test, before you start driving
  • ‘show me’ question (where you show how you’d carry out a safety task) while you’re driving - for example, showing how to wash the windscreen using the car controls and wipers.
